Overview

Conquer Africa’s highest peak on this iconic 7-day Machame Route trek often referred to as the "Whiskey Route" for its scenic beauty and more adventurous path. Beginning in the lush rainforest and ascending through five distinct climate zones to the glaciated summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the Machame Route offers an incredible balance of acclimatization, challenge, and breathtaking views.

Itinerary

Day 0 :

Arrival in Moshi – Ready for Adventure

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) where a friendly Kilimanjaro Vista Safaris representative will transfer you to your comfortable lodge in Moshi. Enjoy cozy accommodations with internet, hot showers, and a pool. In the evening, attend a comprehensive pre-climb briefing with your head guide to discuss the route, gear, and safety protocols.

Day 1 :

Machame Gate – Machame Camp

After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate (1,800m), register with park officials, and meet your mountain crew. The trek begins through dense rainforest expect mossy trees, waterfalls, and the chance to spot blue monkeys or colobus monkeys. Arrive at Machame Camp by afternoon.

Elevation: 1,800m to 3,010m

Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Day 02 :

Machame – Shira Camp

Today’s hike is steeper as you ascend out of the rainforest and into heather moorland, with surreal landscapes of volcanic rocks and mist. Take in sweeping views of Kibo Peak. Camp is set on the Shira Plateau.

Elevation: 3,010m to 3,845m

Hiking Time: 4–6 hours

𝘖𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭: Evening acclimatization hike to Shira Cathedral viewpoint.

Day 03 :

Shira – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

A key acclimatization day. Trek through the alpine desert zone toward Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch. After experiencing high altitude, descend into the scenic Barranco Valley for camp under the Great Barranco Wall.

Elevation: 3,845m to 4,630m (up), down to 3,960m

Hiking Time: 6–7 hours

𝘖𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭: Meditation session or journaling break under the stars.

Day 04 :

Barranco – Karanga Camp

Climb the imposing Barranco Wall an exhilarating scramble offering amazing views. Continue across glacial valleys and ridges to reach Karanga Camp.

Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

𝘖𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭: Afternoon acclimatization hike to 4,200m and back.

Day 05 :

Karanga – Barafu Camp

Ascend the rocky slopes to Barafu Camp, base for your midnight summit. Views of Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks are spectacular. Rest and hydrate as the summit push nears.

Elevation: 4,035m to 4,673m

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

𝘖𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭: Early dinner & breathing technique session for summit prep.

Day 06 :

Barafu – Uhuru Peak – Millennium Camp

Summit Night! Begin before midnight for the most challenging part of the trek. Climb steadily via Stella Point (5,756m) to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) the rooftop of Africa. Celebrate, take photos, then descend via Barafu to Millennium Camp.

Elevation: 4,673m – 5,895m – 3,950m

Hiking Time: 12–14 hours

𝘖𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭: Glacier walk after reaching the summit (conditions permitting).

Day 07 :

Millennium – Mweka Gate – Hotel Return

Trek down through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Celebrate your incredible achievement with the mountain crew and receive your climbing certificate before returning to your hotel in Moshi.

Elevation: 3,950m to 1,640m

Hiking Time: 6–7 hours

Departure Day

Enjoy breakfast and relax at the hotel. Standard check-out is at 11:00 AM. Late check-out and airport transfers are available upon request depending on your flight time.
